Not everybody has a talent for designing websites, and that’s okay.  The majority of people can tell what a decent design is, but have a hard time coming up with a good design.

So what can you do?

One really useful tool that we’ve used before is 99designs.

99designs has a community of talented designers (currently over 950,000 designers), where you can sign up for an account, and place a design project for the designers to bid on.

The way it works is that you name your budget, and this will solicit designers to bid on helping you design whatever you want (logo, business card, book cover, web page, etc).

The best part of this service is that they will design for you up front, and you just have to pick a winner.  Only once you pick a winner that you pay 99designs.  So if you are not satisfied with any of the designs, you don’t have to pay a dime – removing all the financial risks from you.

So in a way, you now have a “mini” army of designers working for you, and you only pay for the design that you want!

Here is a few helpful tips when you post your project:

•  Be as specific as you can in your project description.  The more specific and detailed you are, the higher the chance you will receive a design that you love.
• Answer any questions from designers quickly and promptly.  If it takes days for you to answer, the designers may lose interest as they are the ones bearing a lot of risk in designing for you without guarantee that they will win.
• If you increase your budget, more talented designers will bid for your project.
